Milnar/3M High-Tech Collaboration
Being involved on the ground floor of dental advancements has given Dr. Milnar tremendous insight into better smile care. For the last few months he has been working with the scientists at 3M on nano-technology dentistry. The micro-particles in the 3M Filtek Supreme resin create stronger bonds and achieve more natural coloring in both front and back teeth restorations.
Dr. Milnar's artistic and technical abilities are a very important part of this collaboration because implementation and type of material being used is integral to long-term success. His artistry and dentistry are featured in a 3M CD-ROM (cover pictured) and in their brochure. The smile before and after below is part of the CD presentation.
Things your dentist MUST know about natural-color matching: When restoring teeth, the goal is to create a restoration that is esthetic and harmonious with the surrounding teeth and tissues. Natural teeth are complex to imitate because many colors are distributed through the surface enamel and inner tooth. Besides color, natural teeth have THREE other important characteristics to consider.
1. Opacity/Translucency: tooth's ability to transmit light
2. Surface Texture: degree of smoothness vs. variations or ridges that occur on the tooth’s surface.
3. Surface gloss refers to the tooth’s ability to absorb or reflect light at the surface.

Think of the difference between a matte finish paint and a high
gloss, enamel paint. They may be the same color, but when the surface
texture and gloss are vastly different, the color appears to change
and there is no “match.” Please contact Dr. Milnar if
you want to know more about this level of smile care.
